INDUSTRY APPLICATION · PAPERMAKING
A modern paper machine can carry over a thousand large bearings — the oil has to be right for every one.
A single paper machine may run more than 1,000 bearings, some priced at several thousand pounds each, working under water, high load, contamination and high cleanliness requirements at the same time. MOTTA's papermaking range is selected by section — stock preparation, press section, dryer section and mill utilities — rather than a single mill-wide oil.
What drives product selection in this industry.
- Water, high load and contamination together
The press-section roll-drive gearbox works under water ingress, heavy load and extreme pressure simultaneously — a combination that calls for MOTTA H50, purpose-built for paper machine service. - Bearings too expensive and too numerous to guess on
With bearing costs running into thousands of pounds each and drying-section bearings running hot, humid and fast, oil selection is treated as a reliability decision, not a commodity purchase. - Difficult-to-access lubrication points
Crane and material-handling gearboxes around the mill are specified with MOTTA L1200 synthetic gear oil specifically where oil changes are physically difficult. - High-temperature blower duty in the wastewater section
Paper mills run their own wastewater treatment, and the Roots blowers feeding aeration tanks carry the same high-temperature failure risk documented at municipal wastewater plants.
Paper machine bearing economics — papermakingMOTTA's technical training material for this sector opens with the bearing count itself: a modern paper machine can carry over 1,000 large bearings, while the Yankee cylinder used to dry tissue may run on just two — and a single large roll bearing can run into the thousands of pounds to replace. That cost profile is why the press- and dryer-section oil (MOTTA H50 Series) is purpose-built rather than substituted with a general industrial oil.
